•NAME » Sanae Hanekoma •FANDOM » The World Ends With You •SPECIES » Fallen Angel •GENDER » Male •TIMELINE » Immediately post-game, including after Neku and the others meet at Hachiko. •OCCUPATION » Barista at the Composer Cafe
•POWERS/ABILITIES » No one really knows what sort of supernatural abilities Mr. Hanekoma possesses, nor the extent of his power. He is the guardian of a rather chaotic part of the Underground and entrusted with the task of keeping Joshua in line, so his power must be considerable. He can shape the form of raw Soul, Imprint ideas into objects and art as a sort of subliminal message, and travel between Planes. Abilities such as a 'second sight' have been mentioned, but exactly what it entails is unknown. He is also extremely skilled with electronics and can make a mean cup o' joe.
•PERSONALITY » Charming. Charismatic. Easy-going. The most evident thing about Sanae is the fact that he's incredibly easy to be around. Even more anti-social characters find themselves loosening up around the artist. He's pleasant to talk to, and a good listener. The sort of guy you can really open up to.
But don't expect it to go both ways. It can take months of acquaintance before you hardly know a thing about him. Oh, he'll answer any questions he's asked--and sometimes give a bit too much information--but he certainly won't volunteer anything. He keeps most of his affairs rather private--in Shibuya all of his art is done under a pseudonym and he avoids meeting clients if at all possible. He's the one that others go to for advice and falls easily into a mentor role. He's brilliant at knowing the right thing to say and when to give a nudge.
Not to say that Sanae is all sunshine, puppies, and altruism. Far from. He'll tell you the truth, no matter how hard it may be to hear. His saving grace is only the fact that he's right more often than not. He's quite good at reading people. He also has accurately been called manipulative and sees absolutely no issue with orchestrating events to achieve what he believes to be the optimal results. A self-proclaimed gambler, most of his schemes depend on people acting how he predicts them to.
'The ends justify the means' is a concept that he is entirely too comfortable with.
Not to mention he can be a greedy bastard who never does anything for free. The only question is how he expects you to pay.
•APPEARANCE » Roughly of average height, he's got that lean, wiry sort of frame that hides strength. Not necessarily physical strength, but he's definitely the type of guy that can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. Pale skin and an angular bone structure are characteristic--especially the almost sunken cheeks. Black hair is worn short and casually spiked up at the front. His eyes are almost frighteningly dark--there's been debate if they're dark brown or dark grey. He's certainly a well-dressed gentleman; black slacks, a white button up and a dark grey waistcoat are the norm, though his sandals and stubble reveal his casual nature. He's never seen without his silver wristwatch or his sunglasses.
•HISTORY » Truth be told, not even Sanae is sure of how old he is. When you've been a denizen of the Higher Plane as long as he has, it's easy to lose track. He's old, he knows that for certain, and has been the Producer of Shibuya through quite a few Composers.
Of course, that is speculation. Let's move onto the definites.
It might not have seemed like it, but Sanae played a vital role into those three dramatic weeks of the Reapers' Game. As Producer, one of his jobs was to create items commissioned by the Composer. One of these was a Red Skull pin, the key in Kitaniji's plan to save Shibuya by Imprinting his will upon the populace. What no one knew was that Sanae had his own plan to save Shibuya in motion.
He gave Sho Minamimoto--a rogue Game Master to be--access to forbidden Taboo refinery sigils, allowing Minamimoto to rebuild himself and possibly defeat Shibuya's current Composer. He played both sides like a master, assisting the Composer's proxy, Neku Sakuraba, and his against the crazed mathematician and other Game Masters. The wheels within wheels sort of scheming is very characteristic of Sanae Hanekoma.
Apparently aware of the fact that he was being used, when Minamimoto returned to the Underground, he targeted Sanae's cafe. Sanae fled to a parallel alternate plane to retrieve the Composer, leaving the key to the Shibuya River for Neku to find.
Thanks to Neku, Shibuya was spared from being destroyed--Sanae's ultimate goal, though it's impossible to know exactly how much of it was according to his plan. Knowing him, if asked, he'd say all of it.
The stir that the Game created on the Higher Plane was mentioned, but the repercussions, if any, for Sanae's actions are unknown.
